About me:
My name is Heather Flynn Roller, and I am a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of History at Stanford
University. I study Latin American History, with a focus on
Brazil and the Amazon Basin. Most of my research was conducted at
the Arquivo Público do Estado do Pará, the main regional archive in the Brazilian Amazon, and I also spent some time at archives in Rio de Janeiro (especially the Biblioteca Nacional) and Lisbon. A major resource was the digitized collection of colonial Brazilian documents from the Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino in Lisbon, which have been made available on CD-Rom and partially online (see the Projeto Resgate website - in Portuguese).
I
am currently completing my dissertation, entitled "Colonial Routes:
Spatial Mobility and Community Formation in the Portuguese
Amazon." An article based on one of its chapters is forthcoming
in The Americas: "Colonial Collecting Expeditions and the Pursuit of Opportunities in the Amazonian Sertão" (April 2010).
